In this work, I was exploring ideas about newness and third space based on a series of experiences I had with a young first grade boy named Dylan. These encounters began with a series of drawings of volcano’s Dylan produced in his sketchbook. He then invited me to participate in his play art, pulling me across the room to escape from the volcano’s exploding from his sketchbook, and finding savior in our secret hideout. Dylan drew volcanoes that came to life, he imagined a safe space for us to escape to, and he invited me to join him in this space. These drawings spurred moments of play within the classroom, where Dylan and I (each at first existing in our own separate spaces) created a third space together; a space where new ideas can occur. An authentic original is born out of these shared moments and experiences.

Below is a work that I created in response to this experience with Dylan.
